Beginnings: Imagine what the world would be like if every conception were a conscious conception; if every baby conceived was an answer to a prayer made to the universe for a soul to be sent that we might care for and serve with our whole heart and to the best of our ability. Simply imagine… for a breath or two………
Pre-conception: What a beautiful place to be. All material things begin with thought (whether conscious or unconscious). If you are reading this and are thinking of conceiving, you are obviously already an active and aware participant of life who, I’m sure, could teach us all a few things as well. Or, maybe, you have been trying to conceive and are looking for more information and encouragement. While the technicalities of fertility specialists go beyond the scope of this site, a lot can be said about preparing ourselves physically and energetically to receive a child.
On an energetic level – be daring – pray, meditate, write, talk – go to church, temple, yoga, the woods, your back yard, your mirror – do whatever awakens your spirit to allow transformation into your life and be clear. Be clear about what you are praying for and what you are willing to give to allow that to come into being.
Work on an energetic level may include visualizations (which, by the way, are a great tool to develop for all stages, so may as well begin now), hands-on healing (which can be done to one’s self, by a partner or friend, or by a professional), and other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic, Reiki and so on. Please see alternative therapies for more detail.
Preparing ourselves physically for conception is very similar to how we (ideally) will care for ourselves throughout pregnancy and beyond. On our nutrition page you will find a list of healthy dietary suggestions.
Early conception: Indeed, it is just that: early conception. An idea has manifest on the physical plane and brings with it a whole world of possibility and reality. This can be an amazingly exciting time for some, a shocking time for others and a nervous and even stressful time for others still. The dance of balancing emotion with hormones, health, work and life in general has taken on a whole new dimension. The creator has reclaimed our uterus and the unknown is within arm’s length. Will it be a boy or a girl? Will it be healthy? Will I carry this one to term? Do I want this? Does my partner want this? Are we ready? Am I ready for pregnancy, for childbirth, for motherhood? What did the doctor say? Were the tests ok? Am I ok? Will I be loved and cared for? This is only the beginning (or the continuum) of a life of surrender to higher beings that be. Breathe in… breathe out… for the breath is what carries us through all of life. There is no better time than the present to become the observer of what is. Even if we are very excited and healthy and strong, become the observer of our vibrant energy; come to know it well as the observer. Become conscious and aware of our breath, and from there of our energy level, our thoughts, our emotions, our eating habits, our actions and the miracle of the new life that is being created within us.
Early conception, more commonly known as the first trimester, is an amazing and vital time of embryonic development. By the end of the twelfth week the embryo has become a fetus and has finally taken on the form of a tiny human, smaller than the palm of your hand. All of the vital organs and limbs are generated during this time, mom is flooded with creative hormones and her entire body, mind and emotions are adjusting to this transformational stage (as well as those of her partner ). Many times, the whole being enters into hypersensitivity mode and the value and purpose of one’s life is in the forefront. This can make the mother feel very vulnerable and sensitive. It is a time for great introspection and patience. It is also a time when the support and reassurance of one’s partner is invaluable and has lasting effects. These first three months set the foundation for the life of the being within. The mother should be cared for and should also take good care of herself. In this vulnerable state we learn to ask for things we need and to search for those people who will support us in a healthy and understanding way.
If, by some divine and often little understood arrangement, we miscarry during this time, we are led even deeper into an inner search for understanding. The variety of emotions that can be felt are infinite and all are profound. Time alone reveals what we learn and how we grow from such experiences. Prayers, offerings and ceremonies that include the soul that has come into our lives and left us so soon afterward can be very healing. It is often helpful to invite partners and close friends into such ceremonies. Candles seem to be universal in their ability to bring light, direction and peace within the ritual. Follow your heart here and treasure the lessons that are brought forth.
On a more technical level, one in three women will experience a miscarriage in their life time and the majority are caused by a developmental mishap in the embryonic stage. Other causes include (but are not limited to) hormonal imbalances, uterine scars, fibroids or abnormalities, misimplantation of the embryo (as in ectopic pregnancies), stress, accidents and so on. If there is a tenancy to miscarry often, it is definitely recommended to have your health care provider check hormonal progesterone levels, the uterus and any other areas that may be the cause. At the same time, alternative healing methods may be incorporated to speed the healing and balancing process.
